Are you a Black British student passionate about exploring the legacies of British slavery and its impact on the Caribbean and the UK? This fully funded PhD studentship at UCL’s School of European Languages, Culture, and Society (SELCS-CMII) offers a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research on the cultural and media dimensions of reparations and restorative justice.

Program Details

Host Institution: University College London (UCL)
Department: School of European Languages, Culture, and Society (SELCS-CMII)
Collaborating Centre: Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery (LBS)
Duration: 4 years (Starting September 2025)
Funding: Covers tuition fees (£6,215 annually) and a stipend of £20,280 per year
Application Deadline: 7 July 2025
Interview Dates: Week beginning 14 July 2025

Research Themes

Proposals should explore topics such as:

Media Representation: Coverage of demands for reparations in the Caribbean, Britain, and the US.
Cultural Narratives: Depictions of reparations and restorative justice in literature, film, and broadcast media.
Oral Histories: Public narratives and intergenerational trauma from slavery.
Comparative Analyses: Media portrayals of reparations and restorative justice in global contexts.
Impact Studies: Influence of public debates on the Black diaspora in Britain and the Caribbean.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

1.Be a Black British student with research interests in media, culture, and reparations.
2.Hold a relevant Master’s degree (completed) in disciplines such as sociology, media studies, cultural studies, or Black studies.
3.Have experience studying or working on Black history, racial inequality, or related topics.
4.Meet UCL’s standard postgraduate entry requirements: UCL Graduate Entry Requirements.

Scholarship Benefits

Full tuition coverage at Home Fees rate.
Annual stipend of £20,280.
World-class supervision from Dr. Clive Chijioke Nwonka (SELCS-CMII) and Professor Matthew J. Smith (LBS/Department of History).
