Dreaming of studying in one of the most unique and beautiful countries in the world? The Icelandic Government Scholarships 2026 are now open for international students!

These scholarships are designed for those who wish to pursue a BA program in Icelandic as a Second Language at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík. Each year, about 12 scholarships are awarded, offering students the chance to immerse themselves in Iceland’s rich culture, language, and heritage.

The program runs from September 1 to May 31 and is administered by the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies.

What the Scholarship Covers (Benefits)

Recipients of the scholarship will enjoy:

🎓 Full registration fee coverage at the University of Iceland
💰 Monthly stipend (September–April) to cover room and board
🏠 Option to rent affordable rooms at the Gamli Garður student dormitory in Reykjavík

This package ensures that scholars can focus fully on their studies while experiencing life in Iceland’s capital city.

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

To qualify, applicants must:

✔️ Have completed at least one year of university study in the humanities
✔️ Have
basic knowledge of Icelandic, equivalent to Icelandic Online 1 and 2 (free online courses)
✔️ Be
proficient in English, which will also be used in instruction
✔️ Preferably be
under 35 years of age

👉 Note: U.S. applicants must apply through the Fulbright Program, while all others apply directly to the Árni Magnússon Institute in Reykjavík.

🏫 University Admission: Apply separately to the University of Iceland by February 15, 2026
✍️ Online Icelandic Exam: June 2026 to assess language knowledge
